Host transfer..

20061227 16h30: it comes to my mind that the existing host is about to expire, and I’ve had enough of it. Works OK inside Vietnam but horribly for visitors from outside…must do something

20061227 16h30: one of the old name comes to mind. Hostgator. Have chatted with ‘em several times…seems to be good guys. OK let’s do it.

20061227 17h00: decided to get the cheapest package that can host more than one domains. And pay 1 month to see what happens. Ten bucks. Paying an extra of 3 bucks and getting 100GB of space allowing multiple domains is not a bad comparison. Eh?

20061227 17h30: half an hour struggling with the credit card details, must be something wrong with the distance between my card issuer and the IP I’m using…

20061227 18h30: 17 emails exchanged with Hostgator sales. They manually open my account and I’m impressed by the service. All for ten bucks!

20061227 18h40: accounts set up an appears OK on the temp URL. Going to the registrar and point one of the domains to new nameserver.. should have done this in advance as it’s only an idle domain… Surprised to see the new record prorogated so quickly. Get outa office and go home…(ouch! not home..)

20061228 13h30: set up subdomain details for vnfreelance.net and begin building a new instance of Wordpress. All easy with Fantasico. BTW Hostgator has awsome control panel for shared users.

20061228 14h30: begin exporting old database which contains information of other things not only Wordpress (old host allows only 1 MySQL database) In late 2006 they’re using MySQL 3.xx and an obsolete PHPMyAdmin. Editing the SQLs to remove the other tables.

20061228 15h30: Several attempts fail. The 4th time it works but the Unicode characters go all wrong. Have heard about this before… dont want to think about copying the posts one by one …

20061228 17h30: crying out loud in #vietlug. It turns out to be a very common problem when moving from MySQL 3x to later versions. No clear solutions…

20061228 17h45: a guru suggests to help. Send the text file to him and receive the converted file within 5 minutes. Still have to edit text in Windoze to remove some craps. No luck

20061228 18h00: second attempt from the guru. This time he helps editing the text and I only have to import the .gz file.

20061228 18h19: Here it goes. The VN chars appears on the temp URL, don’t know what magic is contained in the Linux world. Bravo! Close computer’s lid, grab the backpack and jump to honey waiting down there…

20061228 22h00: Looking at the old site to see what else needs to be done before pointing to the new nameserver. Things look fine. OK lah..

20061228 22h30: Pointing www.vnfreelance.net to new name servers. Registrar’s site is slow… but it works

20061228 23h00: pinging to www.vnfreelance.net from Aussie and Europe. Its IP has been changed to new one. Fair enough. Still old IP if pinging from Vietnam. As expected.

20061229 00h00: nothing happens from VN ISP. Tomorrow will do.

20061229 08h30: nothing new. Same goes all the morning.

20061229 13h30: using office Internet with gateway in Aussie. See it in the new host. Wordpress says something about upgrading to new version and things go fine

20061229 14h30: writing first post with the new host… it works

All VN time (GMT+7). That’s it. Thanks to all who has helped!
